The

NB:
I left the following draw system in the UK as I couldn't
fit it, and the metal trunks containing all my kit,
in the back of the truck - I'll get them re-made in
Kenya but better.
In
the meantime I use plastic 20L boxes (Pick'n'Pay, South
Africa) and have made an internal luggage guard to stop
all the kit flying forward whenever I make an emergency
stop - about twice a day on average!. It's also a handy
place to store emergency kit: 2 x triangles (pls. excuse
the glare from the flash!) and 2 x fire extinguishers
(the one on the left is missing in the pic), shackles
and a tow strap. I am also looking for a metal first
aid box to bolt on.
For
protection from the sun I have fitted curtains behind
the driver (on both sides) and for comfort: canvas seat
covers.
I'd
like to fit a pre-fabricated aluminium shelving system.
These are available from a number of suppliers here
in the UK but those are mainly for LandRovers. Anything
bespoke is too expensive so it looks as I'll be importing
from Oz again. My favoured system is the one from PeeCees
Systems, it looks strong, is modular and cheaper than
the rest.
All
these draws are 42" deep except for the p.kit draws
that are 40".
The top two draws are for our personal kit; The row of three
drawers in the middle
are divided into Engine Spares, Kitchen, Tyres & Tubes.The
bottom drawers contai
the heaviest kit: Recovery kit and the other, Tools etc.The
two small apertures each side
where originally for the Hi-Lift in one and my personal
tent in the other.
I've replaced the "furry" surface of the inner
back door with some good quality
ply - thereby giving me a good flat surface for either cooking
or fixing stuff.
NB: note the 2kg AFFF fire extinguishers at the rear.
I also have a third small extinguisher in the cab.
Yes
I would have liked to fit a shelving system, but it's
long bucks, so I've built my own out of plywood. They
don't look very fancy but they offer a substantial amount
of "secure" storage. It's built in two layers:
bottom layer is for all my heavy recovery kit such as
the tirfor, winch cable etc and the hi-lift, the black
bottom of which can be seen on the left. This is one
complete base unit, the next set of drawers is removable
and the drawers can be accessed from the front or back
of the vehicle. Base
level plan. There is a cutout on the bottom right
due to the odd shape of the right hand wheel arch.
The
next level only has three draws but they can open forward
or back. This layer will provide storage for: kitchen
equipment, tools, spares etc. Soft gear, such as clothes
& sleeping bags etc, fit into army kitbags and will
then be jammed into any available space.
Update:
I've since made a third layer of drawers, this time
divided into two for our personal kit. These I had to
shorten a bit to allow the rear window to close! All
draws are "clipped" together to stop them
shifting independantly of each other and then ratchet
strapped down to secure the whole lot.
ENGEL
fridge
A
massive extravegance - I've just bought a new 45L
ENGEL fridge, also from Roy at PRO-X-EQUIP,
and will publish some pictures soon. If you looked
at the base plan above you will see that there is
a space available between the row of Jerrycans and
the draw system - this will avail itself to the fridge.
I've
constructed a frame for the jerrycans and a platform
for the fridge which has about an inch of clearance
each side! This frame can easily be removed from the
vehicle to allow me to put the rear seats back in
whilst we are in the UK (Jasmine gets a bit wary of
riding on the roof at 70mph!). Again I've moved some
D rings in order to ratchet strap the jerry cans down
and to stop the frame from moving around - all in
all it's a very snug fit!
NB:
Had to sell the Engel but will replace it soon.
